A new batch of print samples began light fade testing recently, and the first test results (i.e., the 10 megalux hour interval measurements) will appear in the AaI&A light fade test results list in mid October. The Canon ipf8100 printer uses the latest formulation of Canon Lucia pigmented inks. Compared to the ipfx000 series of printers (e.g., the canon ipf 5000), the photo gray inks were reformulated to improve bronzing and differential gloss performance on photo luster and glossy papers.
The Epson Stylus Pro 3800 has been a very successful 17 inch semi-pro printer for Epson. It uses the classic K3 ink set, but has improved screening algorithms, so it is good to put specific samples made on this printer into test even though other K3 samples on some of the same papers are already in test.
AaI&A received some more Piezography samples using the Portfolio black. They were printed with separate dark gray ink channel underprinting in the max black areas of the image using the ErgoSoft StudioPrint RIP. This “K underprinting” approach may stabilize the Portfolio black fade rate to some extent. Only testing will tell for certain. In any case, I think we have the Portfolio black significantly well represented in the database, and it’s time to move on to other monochrome inksets. Hence, it’s great to see the new 3 channel MIS ebony black sample submitted by a new AaI&A member. Also, the sample of Epson Stylus Pro 9900 with HDR ink printed in advanced black&White (ABW) mode on Museo Silver Rag is an important contribution to the AaI&A digital print research program. Black and white inkjet printing is clearly popular with the AaI&A membership!
